Adam Epstein, Psy.D

Clinical Psychologist Licensed in Maryland and Virginia

Hello, I have practiced as a Clinical Psychologist for the past 22 years. I have extensive training and experience working with adults of all ages (from college students to senior citizens). Clients have experienced a variety of mental health issues (including depression, anxiety, physical health issues, and grief/loss).

I have also worked with active duty service members and military veterans. I previously worked at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for 4 years. I've treated hundreds of service members with combat stress issues (including PTSD and TBI) who suffer from sleep issues, irritability, anxiety, depression and interpersonal difficulties.

My approach to therapy is to provide a non-judgmental, empathetic and supportive environment where the client can discuss issues and work towards his or her treatment goals. Treatment is tailored to the individual and can include cognitive-behavioral and/or insight oriented approaches.

About Me

Educational Background and Training

I received a Master's Degree in General-Experimental psychology in 1990. After working for a year as an employment counselor for the state of Florida, I started my doctoral program in Clinical Psychology in 1991. During my doctoral program, I spent one year treating Senior Citizens and another year working with college students. After completing my classwork and practica, I began a one-year internship at the Dutchess County Department of Mental Hygiene in 1995 where I treated an adult outpatient population. Both my doctoral program and internship program were accredited by the American Psychological Association. After receiving my doctorate, I worked for two years obtaining my residency training which comprised working with adolescents in a residential facility and adult prison inmates. After becoming a licensed psychologist, I worked at a community mental health center and had my own private practice where I primarily treated senior citizens. In 2007, I moved to the Washington, DC area and began working with active duty soldiers returning from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Therapeutic Approach

My theoretical orientation is somewhat eclectic. I consider myself to be humanistic in my approach (i.e., creating a strong psychotherapeutic relationship based upon empathy, unconditional positive regard, and nonjudgmental acceptance of the client where they are at). When I feel it is appropriate and likely to be beneficial to the client, I may incorporate cognitive/behavioral techniques. At other times, I may utilize a more psychodynamic approach. I try to individualize the treatment to the patient.
